Local Area
A Mediterranean island and part of France, Corsica is well worth exploring. Situated 160km (99miles) off the southern coast of France, but closer to Italy, it combines elements of both. You will see the Corsu language on road signs. There are mountains, rugged cliffs and picturesque villages. Driving up steep climbs and around sharp hairpin bends through the jagged mountains can be exhilarating. They are covered in maquis – a mix of harsh and resilient bushes.
There are Roman ruins at nearby Aleria (where you will also find supermarkets).
Bastia is around an hour’s drive north. It’s an interesting historical centre with old and new towns, a port and citadel.
A couple of hours drive south you will find the seaside town of Porto Vecchio with its historic old town, modern marina, bars, restaurants and chic shopping boutiques. A little further to the very south of the island you will find Bonifacio, a town with much history and spectacular sea views across to Sardinia.
